Meet the Family
It started with an idea, and a whole lot of faith.
In 1971 Mr. Burton was still working at the HiTane service station down on the corner of the Holden Beach Causeway. His passion was being a mechanic and servicing vehicles, but he knew he couldn’t support his family long term with it. So, in 1971 he decided to build his first 6 covered boat stalls at his home. At the time there were no other self-storage businesses in the Holden Beach area. He began renting these boat stalls out while he was still working down at the station. Eventually he built his own station also at his home (Burton’s Garage). As his mechanic career took off so did his covered boat storage business. He continued to build more stalls to accommodate the demand for storage. One day though he decided to expand further and build a mini warehouse storage building, unknowing if he would be able to rent it out or not. As he was building the first unit a woman saw it and already wanted to rent it before it was finished. She had already moved her stuff in before he could even get the shingles on it! Someone else saw that building and wanted one too, so of course he built another one. He continued to build storage buildings as the demand for them increased. Thus, was born “Burton’s Garage and Storage” of which Mr. Burton successfully operated for over 50 years. The garage is closed now, but his storage business remains prosperous, all because he had enough faith to build the first stalls.
